Gen AI and Consumer Trust – A Case for Gen AI Disclosure and Transparency

2–3 minutes

As Gen AI transforms the tech landscape, augments our intelligence, and reshapes roles in the workplace, the need for transparency in its use will be critical. Transparency is key to managing and mitigating risks associated with Gen AI, ensuring no harm is done to your brand’s reputation, and for maintaining consumer trust.

While the business world is abuzz with the opportunities of Gen AI, there’s a significant gap in consumer awareness and understanding. A Pew Research study found that over 70% of people lack a clear understanding of how Gen AI impacts their daily lives, and that figure increases to over 85% among certain ethnic and lower- and mid-income groups.

This gap between the enthusiastic adoption of Gen AI by businesses and the relatively limited understanding and trust among consumers underscores a potential risk to businesses, particularly as it relates to consumer-facing implementations of the technology. If not addressed, this disconnect could lead to consumer surprise, mistrust, and ultimately, harm to  your brand.

Potential risks associated with not managing consumer knowledge and expectations around your use of Gen AI can include:

  • Consumer Distrust – Surprised by undisclosed AI interactions, consumers may feel deceived.
  • Brand Damage – Lack of transparency may lead to negative brand perceptions.
  • Ethical Concerns – Non-disclosure may raise questions about a company’s commitment to ethical practices.
  • Preference Shift – Consumers may choose brands that better align and operate within their technological comfort zone.

The good news here is that many of these risks are fairly straightforward to mitigate simply by disclosing your use of Gen AI, and for lesser educated consumers, what it is, how it benefits them, and potential drawbacks.

Tactics to consider implementing to manage and mitigate business, brand, and reputational risks associated with Gen AI include:

    • Gen AI Disclosure – Proactively inform customers where and how Gen AI is integrated into your products, services, and experiences.
    • Consumer Education – Develop a Gen AI transparency and education hub, explaining the role and limitations of Gen AI in the context of your business or category.
    • Alternative Experiences – Offer non-AI alternatives for those wary of Gen AI.
    • Open Feedback Channels – Encourage user feedback on Gen AI experiences to gauge perceptions and address concerns.
    • Monitor and Adapt – Regularly assess how Gen AI implementations impact their customer experience, perceptions of your brand, and trust.

Taking measures to manage and mitigate risks associated with implementing Gen AI through your ecosystem will not only help to safeguard your business and brand reputation, but it will enable you to experience even greater benefits from the technology, further prove your organization’s customer-centricity, and will foster perceptions of reliability and trust.
